Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park’s success is due in no small part to Stratford Station, a critically important piece of transport infrastructure.
The station has seen huge change and development over the last 25 years. But even with increased capacity - most recently the Elizabeth Line - the number of passengers using the train station has soared.
Stratford Station has now become one of the UK’s busiest stations and further projected growth means there is a risk of overcrowding unless addressed.
Short-term measures have helped but long-term action is required, which is why LLDC, along with Newham Council, Network Rail and TfL have come together to make the case for its long-term redevelopment.
Since 2019, these partners have been engaging with local residents, business and wider stakeholders, working on a business case that seeks a better functioning, more resilient station – one that improves passenger experience and supports continued growth.
Quick facts:
- Stratford Station is the fastest growing station in the UK.
- It is the 6th busiest station in the UK for National Rail entries/exits.
- 128 million+ passenger movements recorded in 2019, an increase of 9 million in just 13 years.
- Connects to 25 of 33 London boroughs, as well as East Anglia, Berkshire and Kent.
- 170 trains every hour.
Strategic Outline Business Case
Strategic Outline Business Case
A Strategic Outline Business Case (SOBC) was submitted to the Government on 31 July 2023 making a strategic case for a major reconfiguration of Stratford Station and its immediate surrounding area.
The case considers how an intervention can reduce unacceptably high levels of station crowding and improve passenger experience. It also looks at how to deliver new public space, directly unlock thousands of new homes and jobs on public sector land and realise the full potential of the area.
It sets out a compelling case on how the proposals can deliver against multiple policy objectives on a local, regional and national scale including by supporting UK economic growth and net zero targets.
Partners are now developing more detailed plans through an enhanced business case which is expected to be submitted to government in autumn 2025.

Carpenters Estate Entrance
In October 2024, a new entrance opened at Stratford Station, marking the completion of an £8.4 million project by Newham Council, LLDC and TfL. Located on Gibbins Road, the new entrance helps make journey times quicker for people coming from the south of the station, providing a significantly reduced walking time of up to twenty minutes.
This provides direct access for the local community from Carpenters Estate for the first time. The entrance also features new seating – built by students at the neighbouring Building Crafts College - and bicycle racks, promoting active travel around the station and Stratford town centre more widely.
This is part of a wider improvement programme by Network Rail and TfL that helps to meet increasing passenger demand in the short and medium term. The completion of the works is also an important milestone in the work to secure significant redevelopment of Stratford Station in the longer term.
