Keeping active this winter
Story 08/01/2021
Getting active has never been more important, so we’ve pulled together some easy ways for people in the local community to get moving at the Park this winter – whatever your ability! Not only will your physical health improve, 70% of visitors say open spaces have a positive impact on their mental health. With the current lockdown restrictions, please only visit if you’re within walking or cycling distance and remember to keep your distance from anyone outside your household or support bubble.
When you think about exercise your mind might immediately go to intense gym workouts, but you should never underestimate the benefits of going for a walk! We might be a bit biased, but we feel there's nowhere better to have a stroll than Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. With hundreds of acres of stunning parklands, miles of canal paths and iconic venues to see, there are endless routes for you to explore. And with the cold weather of winter, warm up with a hot drink from one of the restaurants or cafés open for takeaway.
Why not get the whole family involved and spark the kids’ imaginations with our free trails? There’s a trail to suit all interests, whether you want to relive the magic of the 2012 Games, discover the diverse wildlife or marvel at the unique art installations you’ll find dotted around. As a final treat, let the kids burn off some excess energy in one of the play areas at the Park. There is a robust cleaning regime in place to keep the play equipment in the playgrounds as safe as possible, however we recommend sanitising hands before and after use.
If you’re looking to get your heart rate up a bit more, put those running shoes on and take to the miles of pathways you’ll find at the Park. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just starting out, you can go at your own pace. You might also be relieved to know that a lot of the land is flat at the Park!
Cycling is an excellent form of cardio and is perfect for covering the acres of parklands. Don’t worry if you don’t have a bike, you can take advantage of the Santander Cycles scheme. There are plenty of docking stations located in and around the Park, which can be found on this map. Just a reminder to keep an eye out for other Park visitors, particularly when cycling on footpaths.
If you’re missing the gyms and want to do your own solo open-air workout, head to the north of the Park where you’ll find tranquil open parklands with all the space you’ll need for circuits or a HIIT workout. Please be respectful of other people that may be working out in the Park and find another place if your favourite spot is taken – there’s ample space for social distancing across our parklands. Just a reminder that you can only meet one other person outside of your household or support bubble.
However you choose to get moving, wrap up warm and enjoy the hundreds of acres of parklands this winter. The Park is open every day and completely free to enter. You can find the very latest coronavirus updates here.
