Hackney Wick station is named one of the winners of the prestigious National RIBA Awards and London RIBA Awards by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Other London buildings to receive the same accolade this year include the Royal Opera House, Southbank Centre and London Bridge station.

The station will create a new public link in the heart of Hackney Wick, connecting walking routes and new developments within the neighbouring boroughs of Hackney and Tower Hamlets. The station will play a key role in the wider Hackney Wick central masterplan, a joint plan by LLDC and London Borough of Hackney to deliver and grow a neighbourhood centre around the station.

LLDC has invested in quality architecture to support the wider transformation of the area into a thriving town centre, supporting existing communities and the development of new homes with re-provision of affordable workspaces. The overall neighbourhood centre will build upon the unique character and businesses in the area with further jobs and commercial opportunities planned and space for new retail, restaurants, bars and community facilities being provided.

The station is designed by Landolt + Brown architects with artist Wendy Hardie, and built in close consultation and guidance from Network Rail and Transport for London.    The design references elements drawn from the natural landscape of the nearby Lee Navigation and Hackney Wick’s history as an area of industrial innovation.   This is evident in the main concourse with the stunning wall of glass hexagons that recreates the effect of sunlight reflecting off the Lee river and refracting into particular colours that reference the dyes that used to be produced here.    This complex piece of infrastructure was delivered while keeping the station working and functioning throughout the construction.
