Brand new painting prize launches in east London

Press Release 12/03/2014

The crème de la crème of east London artistic talent are being offered a life changing opportunity through a newly created prize aimed at supporting emerging artists.

The East London Painting Prize has been created by The Legacy List, the charity of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park with the Goldhill Family and in association with Bow Arts. The prize honours the life and work of painter and philanthropist, Jack Goldhill and commemorates his major contributions to the east End.

The East London Painting Prize aims to explore and celebrate the diversity in painting practices and different approaches to the medium, as well as championing contemporary artists from east London. It is open to both established and emerging artists living or working in the East London Boroughs of Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, Barking and Dagenham and Redbridge.

A property developer and philanthropist, Jack Goldhill was one of the chief figures in the post-second world war reconstruction of Britain and fittingly, the regeneration of the war damaged east end.  A keen amateur artist himself, Goldhill’s name is synonymous with arts philanthropy in the UK. He was a major benefactor to national cultural institutions, supporting over 70 charitable organisations for more than four decades,  including the Royal Academy and the Princes Drawing School.

Michael Goldhill, representative of the Goldhill Family supporting the Prize said:

“We are delighted to support emerging artists in east London through this newly created painting prize.  My late father and grandparents came from the east End and we are looking forward to working with The Legacy List and Bow Arts to ensure that the next generation of contemporary artists come from this creative source of London.”

Claire Gevaux, Head of Creative Programmes of The Legacy List said:

“This prize, conceived by the Goldhill Family, is of fundamental importance to East London artists to develop their practice further. It also realises our ambitions to nurture and support talented individuals from the boroughs neighbouring Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.  We look forward to seeing the submissions and the exciting but difficult challenge of shortlisting a winner.”

Marcel Baettig, Chief executive of Bow Arts said:

“We’re thrilled to part of this fantastic new prize that supports local artists and that firmly cements east London as the capital for culture.”

There will be a shortlisted artist’s show in an east London warehouse allowing artists to showcase their work alongside other artists in their field. The winning artist will receive a £10,000 cash prize and the opportunity to have a prominent solo show at the Nunnery Gallery.

Artists will have the opportunity to expose their work to an influential panel including artist and painter Varda Caivano (Victoria Miro Gallery), Senior Curator at the Zabludowicz Collection Maitreyi Maheshwari, independent art advisor Sarah Elson (Contemporary Art Society & Bow Arts Trustee), editor and curator Matt Price. The full panel of judges is to be announced in the upcoming weeks. For more information on how to apply for this Prize, please visit www.bowarts.org/ELPP for the submission criteria and deadlines.
