The London Legacy Development Corporation has submitted a planning application for Stratford Waterfront, as part of its plans for East Bank: the next major phase in the delivery of an internationally significant cultural and educational district at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. World-class cultural institutions the BBC, Sadler’s Wells and the V&A in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution will join world-renowned universities UAL’s London College of Fashion and UCL.

The planning application follows the planning consent for a new campus at UCL East which was granted in May earlier this year, and the launch of the V&A Collection and Research Centre at Here East last month.

Stratford Waterfront will provide a new 550 seat theatre for Sadler’s Wells, together with a new centre for choreography and a hip hop academy, both of which will be the first of their kind in the country.

UAL’s London College of Fashion will integrate its six college sites onto one campus, accommodating 6,500 students with their world leading research community, business incubation and social enterprise centres.

V&A East will display its world-famous collections in a new museum, which will include a co-curated programmed with the Smithsonian Institution, bringing two of the world’s leading museums together for the first time.

Stratford Waterfront will become a new home to the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Chorus and BBC Singers as well as for the BBC’s Rock & Pop studio.

The proposals also include a new residential neighbourhood with 600 new homes including 35 per cent affordable housing together with high quality and engaging public spaces and landscaping. Across this site and the other two in the Park still to come forward for development at Rick Roberts Way and Pudding Mill Lane there will be average of 50 per cent affordable housing.

East Bank will build on the area’s existing creative credentials, and East Bank partners have been building relationships and delivering projects with the thriving arts, fashion and community organisations based in the area, including the artistic community in Hackney Wick, East London Dance, Theatre Royal Stratford East, Studio Wayne McGregor and many more.

Subject to planning, Stratford Waterfront is expected to open from 2022.

In the coming years, East Bank will create a transformational and exciting destination in east London.  East Bank is expected to bring an additional 1.5 million visitors to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the surrounding area each year, create more than 2,500 jobs and generate an estimated £1.5billion for the local economy.

There have been extensive public consultations around East Bank. Over 7,000 people have engaged with the project through more than 70 events including neighbourhood pop-ups, public exhibitions and workshops, with feedback from the public shaping future plans.
