Last night (27 February 2019) the London Legacy Development Corporation launched two new policies that will guide the development of 6,000 new homes to be delivered by LLDC, public space and the amenities that will serve the new communities around Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The new policies were unveiled at an industry event by Pam Alexander OBE, LLDC Board Member, and Peter Maxwell, LLDC Director of Design, at The Old Baths in Hackney Wick.

LLDC first published the Design Quality Policy in 2012 following the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and since then the transformation of the Park and its surrounding neighbourhoods has continued at pace. Thousands of homes have been built; Here East is a vibrant centre for innovation; new bridges, road and cycleways link local communities to new facilities such as the Bobby Moore Academy, and the Park attracts 6 million visitors each year.

The Design Quality Policy builds upon the design processes that were set out in 2012, setting out the continued vision for achieving high quality design on and around the Park.

We have also developed the Park Design Guide, that sets out the expected standards for ensuring that good design and biodiversity is sustained across the open spaces of the Park’s estate, while integrating place making principles as part of the ongoing management of the Park.

At the launch Pam Alexander and Peter Maxwell highlighted some of the exemplary schemes that have already been delivered on and around the Park, including the award-winning Hackney Wick Overground Station by Landolt + Brown Architects, the Multi Generation House by PRP and the tech and employment cluster at Here East.

With a substantial amount of development delivered and much more planned, the time is ripe to build on the lessons leaned over the last six years. These new guides use case studies to demonstrate what we think ‘excellent’ looks like and set out in detail our approach as landowner of a valued 21st century Great London Estate. We hope these new policies help to inspire those that work alongside us as well as those that work with us.”
