Bobby Moore’s close friend and team-mate opens new state-of-art secondary school alongside David Ross, the school’s sponsor

5 December 2018:  Sir Geoff Hurst MBE today officially opened Bobby Moore Academy, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park’s brand new secondary school.  The school, which opened its doors for the first time to secondary students in September 2018, is part of the David Ross Education Trust.

At the opening event, Sir Geoff spoke to students and guests from the local community about the significance of the new school being named in Bobby Moore’s honour, as well as the World Cup winning captain’s values.   Sir Geoff also toured the new school and spent time watching Bobby Moore Academy’s football team train on the pitch its students use next to West Ham United’s ground at the London Stadium.

Sir Geoff Hurst MBE said: “It is a tremendous privilege to open this fantastic school in Bobby Moore’s honour. Bobby would be proud to have his name associated with a school just a stone’s throw from where he grew up.  From spending time here today with students, parents and teachers, the sense of community pride there is in Bobby Moore Academy and excitement about what this school will do for generations to come is clear for all to see.  It is a wonderful school and a fitting tribute to a man who led by example, believed in something, worked tirelessly to achieve it and did so with dignity and humility.”

Bobby Moore Academy’s primary and secondary schools, will provide an outstanding education to more than 1,500 children and in 2022 the school’s Sixth Form will open allowing students to study for their A-levels.   Set within the stunning Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Bobby Moore Academy was developed in partnership with the David Ross Education Trust and the London Legacy Development Committee (LLDC).
