Stratford Waterfront masterplan consultation
Press Release 17/10/2017
Consultation on a revised masterplan for Stratford Waterfront, part of the new development of cultural and educational institutions planned for Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, is underway.
Several public and stakeholder events are planned for the coming weeks with comments feeding into the final planning application due to be submitted in autumn 2018.
The plans for the site have been revised following likely changes to the London View Management Framework which made the proposed residential towers in the original scheme unsuitable. In order to ensure that the scheme could progress on time with a minimal exposure to risk, the designs have been amended to deliver a largely similar overall scheme utilising the site’s capacity in a different way.
This amended masterplan also incorporates comments from 4,900 local residents, students and businesses who took part in previous consultation exercise. The new masterplan has a revised layout for the c. 600 residential units on the north of the site and a more compact union of buildings at the southern end for the UAL’s London college of Fashion, a new space for the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), a new dance theatre for Sadler’s Wells and space for a fourth institution.
Proposals for the UCL East campus, which also forms part of the wider project, are progressing well with the submission of the outline planning application in May 2017.
The Stratford Waterfront planning application is due to be submitted in autumn 2018 with the first buildings scheduled for opening in late summer 2022. These plans remain subject to the provision of grant funding from Government, which has been agreed subject to consideration of a detailed business case. This is expected to be confirmed in the coming months; a fuller statement on the programme will be issued then. Consultation has begun now, in anticipation of a positive outcome, to ensure the planned date for opening in 2022 can be realised.
