London Stadium welcomes Saracens and Harlequins clash

Press Release 10/07/2017

The London Legacy Development Corporation and Newham Council are delighted that Saracens RFC have decided to move their most prestigious fixture from Wembley to the London Stadium. Every year this is one of the most talked about matches in global club Rugby.

The London Stadium is already one of the world’s iconic sporting venues and this will add to its reputation, creating another legacy story to build on the success of the many memorable Rugby World Cup matches held here in 2015.

David Goldstone, Chief Executive of LLDC, said: “It’s great to see the London Stadium delivering prestigious sporting events like this. It shows how flexible this multi-use venue can be and is genuinely legacy in action.”

Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales said: “Newham as host borough for Rugby World Cup 2015 and the London Stadium have already hosted some fantastic games of Rugby with some of the greatest teams, including world champions the New Zealand All Blacks and the charismatic all-action Barbarians.  We are excited to now be welcoming Saracens, the champions of Europe, and Aviva Premiership rivals Harlequins for this mouth-watering London derby game. It is another opportunity for Newham residents to see even more top class sport in a truly world class venue that can also boast athletics, football, motorsport and concerts amongst other activities that are ensuring a lasting legacy from the 2012 Games.”
