• Hub 67 will be a new community centre in Hackney Wick and Fish Island for young people and local residents • Made up of recycled cabins from London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games • Hub 67 will be run with the local community and for the local community

Cranes have today lifted nine cabins into place to form the skeleton of Hub 67, the new community centre in Hackney Wick and Fish Island. Based at 67 Rothbury Road, next to Frontside Skate Park, Hub 67 will be a new focal point for residents, hosting events, classes and community groups. 

Local people are being invited to have their say on the activities they want their Hub to host. These activities could range from stay and play sessions for young years, fitness, sport and art activities- making use of local skills and the facilities of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park - to career advice, employment skills, mentoring, up-cycling  and life coaching. The Hub will be run by ‘Team 67’ and be governed by a steering group made up of local residents and businesses whose ultimate aim is to provide a safe and welcoming community space for everyone. If you are interested in joining the steering group please also get in touch via the website.  

Young people and local residents have been heavily involved from the outset in the development of the Hub, which has been set up in response to a need for more flexible community space. Local residents are currently being invited to help design and make the outside artwork for the facade of the building and the central chandelier that will hang in the main hall of the Hub. 

From 2 October there will be weekly drop in workshop sessions every Thursday evening from 6pm to 8pm at Kings Yard Energy Centre,  1 Waterden Road, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London E15 2GP (opposite the White Building on the other side of the canal). A youth programme will be run from Hub 67 that aims to develop a core group of young leaders and provide them with the skills they need to benefit themselves and their communities through a series of social action projects. The Legacy Corporation is also working with carpentry apprentices from Hackney Community College who will be making some of the furniture that will be used in the Hub.

We want Hub 67 to be a legacy for the young people of Hackney Wick and Fish Island and their community.” 

Tracie Trimmer-Platnam, who has lived in Hackney Wick for 15 years and has been involved in the project from the start, said: “We’ve been working to bring Hub 67 to life for three years and it’s very exciting seeing the cabins being lifted into place. 

Hackney Wick is a very special place full of special people. People round here are excited that they’ll have somewhere they can come together as a community, but also learn more about each other and enjoy spending time together.” 

Recycled from cabins used in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Hub 67 forms part of the Legacy Corporation’s wider work in Hackney Wick and Fish Island, which includes leading improvements to the overground station, designating new conservation areas, and supporting initiatives such as Frontside Skate Park.
