EAST WICK AND SWEETWATER DEVELOPMENT MOVES FORWARD THROUGH HOMES ENGLAND FUNDING
Press Release 14/02/2019
One of the country’s largest regeneration schemes is underway – two new neighbourhoods called East Wick and Sweetwater at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park – enabled through £78 million loan funding from Homes England, the government’s housing delivery agency.
The project, carried out in a joint venture by Places for People and Balfour Beatty on behalf of the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC), will provide 1,500 homes (including 450 affordable), schools, green spaces, business and creative space, leisure and community facilities.
Phase 1 of the project is already underway, with the first homes expected to be completed in summer 2020, delivering 130 new affordable homes, 105 homes for private rental, as well as over 35,000 sq ft of business and creative space, community gardens and a crèche.
Rosanna Lawes, Executive Director of Development, London Legacy Development Corporation:
“It’s great to see work starting on the new neighbourhoods at East Wick and Sweetwater. These new communities provide much needed new homes within walking distance of the tens of thousands of new jobs at the emerging business hubs at Here East, International Quarter London and the new culture and education district at East Bank.”
Andrew Atkins, Development Director, East Wick and Sweetwater:
“The start of the first phase of construction works for East Wick and Sweetwater is a big moment for Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the people of east London.
“At the heart of this major development is an unwavering focus on the community. It is people, their families and the wider community who will benefit and our work will help secure the long-term urban regeneration benefits of the London 2012 Olympic Games.”
East Wick and Sweetwater are two of five new neighbourhoods to be built on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park over the next 15 years. By the end of this year LLDC expects 11,000 new homes to have been built on the Park, with a further 22,000 planned by 2036.
New residents will be connected to a much wider community around the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, through new and improved infrastructure links to the existing neighbourhoods of Hackney Wick, Fish Island and the wider East London community.
