Treasured architect Zaha Hadid’s Brit Awards trophy unveiled

Story 01/12/2016

From the London Aquatics Centre to the BRIT Awards, Zaha Hadid continues to leave her legacy in the exciting 21st century of design.

Dame Zaha Hadid

The late Dame Zaha Hadid captured all of our attention with her stunning design for the London Aquatics Centre which saw many medals and world records broken throughout the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Being no stranger to awards herself, she continued to work on her own legacy after being selected as the seventh designer for next year’s BRIT Award statuettes.

Hadid began work on the project three months before her death in March this year, following a sudden heart attack in Miami. The British Architect was celebrated for her ground-breaking work and unique vision in the 21st century which is reflected in the first images of the BRIT Award statuettes, which was unveiled this morning. Previous candidates chosen to design the exclusive statuette include artists Damien Hirst and Sir Peter Blake and fashion designer Pam Hogg.

BRIT’s chairman Jason Iley said: "We are delighted with the finished statues. Like Zaha, they are innovative and original and have gone well beyond our expectations to create something special that will progress the award into the future."

He has previously told how the Iraqi-born architect told him: "I know exactly how I want to do it. I have a vision for it."

Zaha Hadid Design director Maha Kutay worked on Hadid's original ideas, saying: "Our design expresses Zaha's unwavering belief in progress and optimism for the future and a break from the norm."

Hosted by Canadian sensation, Michael Buble, The BRIT Awards 2017 takes place on 22 February, just a stone’s throw away from her legacy on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, at London’s O2 Arena.

Both Zaha’s and the London 2012 legacy lives on at the Park, as the wave-inspired London Aquatics Centre, which is also referred to as the pool of champions, continues to be used for competitive and recreational aquatic sports throughout the year. More information about the London Aquatics Centre, including opening times and membership options can be found here.
