Tour de France - travel and transport update
Story 20/06/2014
On Monday 7 July, the Tour de France will pass through Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, as part of its Stage 3 route from Cambridge to The Mall.
Travel and Transport Update
It will be a spectacular sporting event, free for all to come and watch, but with more than 200 riders and 2,000 supporting vehicles passing through the Park, the event will involve road closures and significant disruption to anyone wanting to travel through the Park that day.
There will be substantial road closures throughout Newham and London on the day. The main route will travel through the Park, with Waterden Road, Westfield Avenue and Clarnico Lane being closed between 10am and 6pm. Roads that feed into these roads may be closed or for local access only – heavy congestion is likely. There will also be a number of other surrounding roads closed in the surrounding area.
We would recommend that people do not try and drive to the Park on the day of the event, as roads will be closed, and vehicles parked in closed areas will be towed away. Train services to Stratford or Stratford International will be the best way of coming to the Park, but public transport will be busier than usual, and many bus routes are being diverted – including the 308 and the 339. We are also expecting large numbers of people throughout the Park and the pavements to be busy with spectators, so if you’re visiting the Park or any of its venues, allow longer to reach your destination – especially as road crossing points and times will be limited throughout the day.
Stratford tube and overground station will be open as usual, but Jubilee and Central lines are expected to be extremely busy from midday until around 6pm. To avoid queues, you may wish use Abellio Greater Anglia services to Liverpool Street and change for Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines towards King’s Cross St Pancras. The Park and its venues can also be accessed from Stratford International DLR station, which may be less busy on the day. Southeastern highspeed services from Stratford International run to St Pancras International, and take seven minutes – however, Oyster Cards, Travelcards and Freedom Passes are not valid on Southeastern High Speed services.
You can download a map which shows how roads will be affected in the Park below. For further information, including planning your visit please visit www.tfl.gov.uk/tourdefrance.
