Christine Ohuruogu returns home to present former school with piece of the London 2012 track
Story 18/10/2016
Former Olympic, World & Commonwealth 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu visited her former secondary school, St Edwards Church of England, Romford, to present a commemorative piece of the London 2012 athletics track, that she and so many other Olympic legends raced on four years ago.
The 32 year-old from London, presented a large, decorative framed piece of the track to the school as a memento of her sporting achievements, and was also presented with a piece of the track.
The London 2012 track that Christine ran on alongside athletics stars such as Mo Farah, Jess Ennis-Hill and Usain Bolt on has been removed and replaced ahead of the London 2017 IAAF World Championships and World Para-Athletics Championships next summer.
During her visit to St Edwards School, Ohuruogu said: “I’m so happy to be here today to award my school with this beautiful piece of London 2012 track.
“St Edwards is a great school and it really helped me to find a love for sport. There are great facilities and really supportive and encouraging PE staff. I took part in everything, team and individual sports, before focusing on athletics in later years, so I’m delighted to be able to give something back in this iconic London 2012 memento.”
Ian Raper, Deputy Head of St Edwards School said: “We would like to thank Christine so much for returning here to present us with a gift that we will cherish forever and we hope that it will encourage many of our students to aspire to the successes of the stars of London 2012.”
David Edmonds, Chair of E20 Stadium LLP said: “We’re really honoured to present a piece of London 2012 history to local schools and some of our greatest athletes who experienced the true magic of the home games. We hope this piece of the track will take pride in St Edwards School and inspire its students to follow in the footsteps of legends like Christine.”
The public is being given the chance to own a piece of the iconic London 2012 track after it was successfully removed from the former Olympic Stadium.
The majority of the track is available for people to buy at £60 for a framed piece of track (120mm x 75mm set mounted into a 203mm x 152mm piece of acrylic.)
There is also the opportunity to purchase ‘Track in a Box’ - a beautifully presented gift or memento from London 2012 with a 260mm x 160mm piece of track sitting in its own commemorative box. The track sits inside a piece of laser cut foam which surrounds a zinc etched plaque adding authentication to the purchase. This will be available for £99.
A personalised box, plus a limited edition large section of stadium track (mounted into a 600mm x 400mm laser cut acrylic frame), are also available for £120 and £399 respectively. Finally, a very limited number of premium sections are available, including numbers from both the start and finishing lines, for those collectors or sports fans who want a unique and extra special piece of history from 2012.
