East Bank is far more than a collection of cultural and university buildings. Its full potential lies in the opportunities it generates for local communities and local arts and educational organisations.
East Bank activities
East Bank is a unique collaboration between world leading universities, arts and cultural institutions that is creating opportunities for the local community and everyone who visits, lives and works in east London.
Projects with local people and businesses such as EAST Education, are raising aspiration and attainment in an area with one of the youngest populations in the country. Summer schools, classroom activities and events based around arts, music, science, fashion and technology are equipping young people with the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to take advantage of the jobs and opportunities being created.

Creative employment opportunities
STEP is a programme for young east Londoners looking to start a career in the creative sector, offering young people the opportunity to have paid work across two different professional areas, as well specialist skills training and mentoring. The Fashion District will shortly be launching STEP into Fashion. It helps those people involved to develop the networks, skills and experience they need, while also helping organisations find talented local employees. STEP is funded and developed by the London Legacy Development Corporation, supported by founding partners Bow Arts, Sadler’s Wells, and UAL London College of Fashion.
The Creative and Cultural Opportunities Programme has Sadler’s Wells, the V&A and UCL's as key partners, and aims to connect local young Londoners to creative and cultural organisations through masterclasses, workshops and training sessions to support them with starting a career in the creative industries. Participants also get 121 advice and guidance as well as job opportunities and application support.
For more information on jobs and training opportunities, visit our East Works pages.
Schools and young people
Local schools are already benefitting from the work of the East Bank partners. Sadler’s Wells is working with 12 Associate Schools based in east London, all of which are offered workshops, masterclasses and theatre visits. The BBC is working with schools in east London as part of the Ten Pieces project, introducing children to classical music. UCL engineering students are providing tutoring in 10 local primary and secondary schools. And UAL’s London College of Fashion is running a range of programmes including their Schools Innovation Challenge – won in 2019 by Stormont House School in Hackney – and after school Fashion Clubs at Chobham Academy.
In addition, every year, hundreds of local 13-16 year olds take part in the free EAST Summer School, where East Bank partners help bring some amazing experiences and new careers to life for them!
