Story 17/01/2020
UPDATE – Due to the current worldwide health situation, our Year of Sport has been postponed until next year. Many of the events below will be rescheduled, so we can all look forward to a brilliant Year of Sport in 2021.
From the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games to Euro 2020, the coming months are filled with incredible sporting events around the world. Closer to home, things are pretty exciting right here at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park too, and we look forward to celebrating a fantastic Year of Sport in our iconic venues and beyond!
If popping over to Japan is a little out of reach, you can see plenty of elite athletes on their Road to Tokyo as we host a number of Olympic qualifying events on the Park. Feeling inspired? You can improve your own skills with training sessions in our world-class sporting venues, or try something new with some of our free community activities.
The stakes are high and the skills even higher in some of the last few qualifier events before the Tokyo 2020 Games. Find out more about each one below!
Boxing Road to Tokyo
14–24 March: Boxing Road to Tokyo
Watch some of the best boxers in the world compete for their place in the 2020 Games in a series of tense matches across ten days hosted at the Copper Box Arena. 50 men and 27 women are competing, including 13 boxers from Team GB – so come along and cheer them on on home soil!
FINA Diving World Series
27–29 March: FINA Diving World Series
As the finale of the FINA Diving World Series tour – which also took place in China, Russia and Canada – this elite diving event would be exciting enough already, but the fact that it’s one of the last qualifying events for divers hoping to make Tokyo 2020 adds even more tension! British diving stars Jack Laugher, Grace Reid and Tom Daley (who won a gold at last year’s FINA Diving event with his synchro partner Matty Lee) are already confirmed for this exciting event in London’s most iconic pool.
British Swimming Championships
14–19 April: British Swimming Championships
How do you find the very best of the best? This selection event will help determine who makes it to Team GB and represents their country in Tokyo this summer! Expect an amazing atmosphere in this tense competition where every millisecond counts.
Street League Skateboarding
22–24 May: Street League Skateboarding
Stopping off at the Copper Box Arena for the first time last year, Street League Skateboarding is a global event that is streamed around the world – but you can be right there watching it live!
With skateboarding making its debut appearance at the Tokyo 2020 Games, this final qualifier event is a great opportunity to see future champions compete. For more information about what to expect, read our interview with British hopeful Alex Decunha.
Take a look below at what else we’ve got coming up, and how you can join in with your very own Year of Sport. You can also follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram or sign up to our e-newsletter for the latest updates.

Major League Baseball is returning to London Stadium, after its hugely successful debut last year for the first ever London Series.
The Müller Anniversary Games is also back again, in one of the most popular events of the summer. Last year saw world records broken and new standards set for track and field, so it's not one to miss!
Later in the year, Six Day London, the hottest event in cycling, will return to Lee Valley VeloPark for the finale of its 2020 series in spectacular fashion!
Get active
Throughout the year, we’ll be putting on free activities open for everyone to take part in, both in our venues and around the Park itself. We’ll also be working with local schools and community groups to provide free sporting sessions to inspire the next generation of British athletes! Keep checking back for more information about our free fitness sessions, for all age and abilities.
If you’d rather get active on your own terms you’ll find plenty of tracks for running and cycling, free outdoor gyms and beautiful pathways for walking. We’re also proud to be a fully accessible park, so everyone can enjoy exploring.
Try something new, discover world-class facilities and work towards your own personal goals!
World-class venues

Once the setting for the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2012 Games, as well as the famous ‘Super Saturday’, London Stadium continues to make history by hosting a varied programme of sports and culture events.
The nearby London Marathon Community Track is the training ground for some of Britain’s best athletes, as well as being a popular space for community sports.
Lee Valley VeloPark
Overlooking the Olympic Rings in the north of the Park, Lee Valley VeloPark is the first place in the world where you can take part in four types of cycling in one place: track cycling, road racing, BMX or mountain biking. There are sessions for all levels of experience, and all equipment is available to hire.
Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre
As well as hosting everything from community sport to international tournaments, this centre offers indoor and outdoor court hire – perfect come summer when you get bitten by the tennis bug!
Copper Box Arena
As well as offering a well-equipped gym space, The Box That Rocks is the training venue of London Pulse netball and the London Lions basketball team – so make sure you catch a game to cheer on the home teams!
London Aquatics Centre
Underneath the iconic wave-like roof of the London Aquatics Centre, you’ll find an incredible 50m pool with diving facilities, lane swimming and a training pool. Alongside being open to the public, it’s also a popular training venue for Olympic and Paralympic athletes – so you might pop in for a swim and leave feeling inspired!
ArcelorMittal Orbit
Can’t choose which venue to visit? Take a trip up the ArcelorMittal Orbit and you’ll be able to take them all in at once from the sculpture’s panoramic viewing platforms! Take in the full scale of the Park as you look out over it from 80m up, and soak up impressive skyline views across the capital.
Fancy getting your heart racing without a pair of trainers in sight? Challenge yourself to Ride The Slide for an adrenaline-fuelled zip down the world’s longest and tallest tunnel slide!
The Park is free to enter and near a number of transport links in Zone 2/3. There are also some fantastic cafés, bars and restaurants, so whether you want a brunch before an event or a snack after an exercise session, you’ll find something to suit!
