Former Lance Corporal turned Park employee Maurillia Simpson has spoken of her pride at winning gold and silver medals at the Invictus Games.

In an interview with the Newham Recorder, Maurillia describes competing in the inaugural tournament as a 'phenomenal experience' and 'just shy of a miracle'. On competing in the Invictus Games, a tournament aimed at wounded servicemen and women from across the globe, Maurillia said:

“My highlight was how much the public really embraced us as a family and just let us know how proud they really are of us and how much they know we are there and they are willing to support us for however long".

The East Village resident was left with permanent nerve damage in her leg when she was hit by a car while stationed in Germany as part of the British Army’s Royal Logistics Corps. Maurillia had previously completed three tours of Iraq.

Following her triumph at the Invictus Games, Maurillia, who works for Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park's security team, has now set her sights on competing at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
