AC DC CHRISTEN NEW LOOK STADIUM WITH ELECTRIFYING PERFORMANCE

Story 06/06/2016

Saturday 4 June saw legendary Australian rockers AC/DC christen the transformed Stadium at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park with a blistering performance as part of their European 'Rock or Bust' tour.

It was the historic first gig at the new-look Stadium following an enormous transformation programme and the performance didn't disappoint, with a spectacular showcase featuring pyrotechnics, flames, fireworks and giant cannons.

The iconic athletics track was covered up as 60,000 AC/DC fans came to enjoy a glorious day of rock music. Guns N’ Roses’ frontman Axl Rose was an able deputy for regular frontman Brian Johnson, with fellow Guns N’ Roses’ members also in the crowd and tweeting their delight as they rocked out with the crowd.

The Stadium has been undergoing work since 2013 to renovate it into a year-round multi-use venue. Some of the work included: installing a 45,000m2 cantilevered roof, a London Marathon community track, innovative retractable seating for 21,000 spectators and providing up to 428 wheelchair user accessible viewing spaces, making it one the most accessible stadiums in the country.

The gig marks the start of a busy summer of events at the Stadium. The London Anniversary Games return to the Park in July for one of the world’s biggest athletics event and the pioneers of dance music are coming this September for Moondance Festival. From this year, the Stadium  becomes the new home of West Ham United FC and the National Competition Centre for athletics in the UK, as well as a major venue for sporting events.
