EXPERTS SOUGHT FOR INDEPENDENT PANEL TO HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE DESIGN OF THE QUEEN ELIZABETH OLYMPIC PARK
Press Release 25/05/2012
Architects, environmentalists and development experts are being sought for a new Quality Review Panel.
The independent panel will advise on the design of the future Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park – the name for the Olympic site after the Games.
The new Park will have lush parklands and waterways, new neighbourhoods and world class sports and entertainment venues. It will draw on the unique character, energy and heritage of east London and the best elements of London’s many successful neighbourhoods.
The creation of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will be one of the biggest construction projects in Europe. In just 18 months the Park will be transformed to include a new nature-themed community hub and playground and a new Plaza with flexible event and leisure spaces, setting the stage for the development of five new neighbourhoods, with up to 7,000 new homes and places of employment bringing up to 8,000 jobs to the area.
The panel will provide informal advice as well as formally review the planning applications for proposals within the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the wider Mayoral development area.
Andrew Altman, Chief Executive of the London Legacy Development Corporation said:
“The future Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will be a fantastic new part of London, a place for people to relax, to be entertained, to get involved as well as a place to live and work.
“This is an opportunity to shape the design of the Park – we want our Park to have the highest possible standards of sustainability, awe-inspiring engineering and exemplary design. The Quality Design Panel will help us to achieve these aspirations.
“We are looking for an exceptional group of people from a wide range of disciplines to apply to join the panel. Specifically we are seeking people with expertise in all aspects of design – architecture, urban design and landscape architecture – as well as sustainability, regeneration, urban sociology, economic viability and development delivery, to help us build a great new piece of the city.”
Applications and appointments to the Panel will be managed by an independent organisation to protect the integrity of the process.
The Development Corporation is seeking 12 to 15 panel members, from whom a Chairperson and a Vice-Chairperson will be appointed.
The panel will start work in July this year and operate for a period of four years, and its work will include reviewing the development of the first new neighbourhood on the Park, Chobham Manor, a range of new public spaces and developments and public realm initiatives within the surrounding communities.
The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will open in phases from July 2013.
