New pedestrian bridge opens between Wallis Road and Waterden Road

New pedestrian bridge opens between Wallis Road and Waterden Road

Press Release 10/10/2013

The new bridge is already open to pedestrians and will be fully accessible from December when a lift has been installed, complimenting the fully accessible bridge already in place and in use at White Post Lane. Together with the recently announced £10m redevelopment of Hackney Wick station, this will open up new facilities as well as business and job opportunities to the local community.

Visitors can already spend time in the recently opened Copper Box Arena where they can join the gym, enjoy a game of badminton or take an exercise class, before taking a walk through the landscaped parklands in the north of the Park and enjoying a bite to eat in the Timber Lodge community centre. There are also a series of autumn and winter events taking place over the coming months and the south of the Park, Aquatics Centre and Lee Valley VeloPark are all due to open in the spring of next year.

Dennis Hone, Chief Executive, London Legacy Development Corporation, said: “The Legacy Corporation in committed to the regeneration of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and its surrounding areas and we are delighted to be able to open up, not just a new route into the Park, but new potential for business and employment.”

The opening of the bridge at Wallis Road follows the announcement by the Mayor of London that an £10m upgrade of Hackney Wick Station, proposed by the London Legacy Development Corporation, was one of four projects shortlisted to receive a share of a £40million fund for regeneration. Improvements would include the relocation of the station entrance at street level to reduce journey times to iCITY and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the installation of lifts to create step free access, and the creation of the new north-south pedestrian route for both station and non-station users through the railway embankment. The upgrade would be completed by 2016.
