LLDC - An Evolving Organisation

Over the next few months, people will begin to see some significant changes being made at LLDC, following a review of the mayoral development corporation by the Mayor of London.

As we complete many of the larger projects that were promised as part of the bid for the London 2012 Games, the organisation will evolve into a leaner, more focused body that can deliver the next phase of our work. We will continue to be a Mayoral Development Corporation but our area of responsibility will focus primarily on the oversight and operation of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and completing the remaining developments.

Our vision to deliver on our legacy promises remains as strong as ever. We will continue to work with partners to connect local residents to the benefits of ongoing growth in and around Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and to achieve transformational change in east London.

What are the main changes?

Town Planning

The first key change will be on town planning. From December 1, 2024, LLDC will cease to be the Local Planning Authority and its powers will be handed back to the four local boroughs in Newham, Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest. The local boroughs will now be responsible for the determination of future planning matters in the area. You can read more about the transfer of town planning powers here.

Our boundary will also shrink down to that of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from December 1, 2024 where we will be responsible for the operation and oversight of the parkland and its venues.

A robust programme of work has been in place to ensure a smooth handover to the borough planning teams so that local residents and businesses will be unaffected by the changes.

A smaller organisation

Once planning powers have been returned, LLDC will complete its evolution so that on April 1, 2025 the new body can carry on the task of delivering and creating opportunities for the local area.

There will be fewer staff at LLDC as our housing and other development projects complete but we will still be active in the community to ensure the impact of our work is felt beyond the Park’s boundary.

New governance

Overseeing this evolving organisation will be our new Chair, Suki Kalirai, and new Chief Executive, Shazia Hussain. They will work together to ensure that LLDC delivers on the promises made and that we remain accountable to the people of London through the Mayor of London.

Our Board will reduce in size to reflect our new focus but our meetings will continue to be held in public and details published on our website.

While these changes are significant for LLDC, they won’t affect how we engage with local people. We are happy to answer your questions and queries and will continue to consult on the many schemes and developments planned for the area.
