The ad tells the story of how Andrew Willis built Frontside Gardens Skatepark after winning a Legacy Corporation competition to find innovate ideas for bringing the disused land back into public use. Andrew’s bid was selected from 12 entries and he was initially given the land for three months. He set to work on building the skatepark out of salvaged materials from local businesses and leftover items from Olympic venues, including sections of the beach volleyball stand at Horse Guards Parade.

Thanks to Andrew’s dedication, and the support of the Legacy Corporation, Frontside Gardens Skatepark has quickly established itself as a popular haunt for local skateboarders. The Legacy Corporation has since extended the lease and helped fund additional BMX ramps.

Eleanor Fawcett, Head of Design at the London Legacy Development Corporation, said: “Frontside Gardens is an excellent example of how you can bring derelict land back into public use with a bit of imagination. It provides a model for how we might use other unused spaces while they are awaiting redevelopment and is part of our wider aims to help connect the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to its surrounding area”.
